When President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 in 1942, it sanctioned the internment of West Coast Japanese Americans. Artist Tamiko Rast's grandparents, 2nd and 3rd generation Japanese Americans, were sent to Heart Mountain in Wyoming and Gila River in Arizona.
